Le fait d'écouter de la musique classique nous rend-il plus intelligent? Cette croyance, connue sous le nom d'effet Mozart, s'est répandue à travers les Etats-Unis dans les années 1990. Issu d'une série d'expériences scientifiques remises en question ultérieurement, l'effet Mozart est devenu un véritable phénomène de société et a suscité un intérêt populaire sans précédent, comme en témoignent l'apparition de nombreux articles de presse, de jouets didactiques pour enfants, de CD de musique classique, et même des initiatives de législation. L'auteur explore les facteurs favorisant l'émergence, la diffusion et le déclin de cette croyance populaire en analysant les discours de centaines d'articles de la presse écrite. Il documente les transformations de contenu qui sont survenues et qui ont contribué à la création d'une légende scientifique. Le cas de l'effet Mozart est intégré à une réflexion de synthèse sur les différentes formes de croyances populaires, comme les représentations sociales, les rumeurs, les légendes urbaines et les théories du complot.
