The fields of research of the laboratory are being executed through projects of different natures. We have mainly:
- CTI projects - The CTI is the Swiss innovation promotion agency. "Science to market" is its creed. Its aim is the rapid conversion of state-of-the-art laboratory findings to marketable products. Hence, the CTI backs joint R&D projects involving tertiary level institutions and the industry.
- SNSF projects - Being a federal mandate, the SNSF (Swiss National Science Foundation) is Switzerland's foremost institution in the promotion of scientific research. The SNSF funds research which leads to new knowledge. It also promotes application oriented-research in various scientific fields.
- EU projects - The European Union funds each year many research projects in all disciplines. The swiss institutions such as IMT can apply for these projects in partnership with european academic and industrial partners.
- Special research programs - such as the past MINAST priority program (1996-99) and collaboration programs between isntitutions (EPFL, CSEM).
- Direct Mandates - The ESPLAB is also active in research through direct funding from industries for applied research and development. This represents about 30% of its research activities.
