18-19 February 2015

A workshop in collaboration with the CUSO Doctoral Program in Ecology & Evolution

Organizer: Edward Mitchell, University of Neuchâtel

Flyer

Objectives

The objective of the workshop is to give an introduction to forensic ecology.

The workshop addresses both fundamental themes such as disturbance ecology, resistance and resilience of communities and ecological processes to perturbations and applied aspects such as estimation of the time since death in criminal investigations.

Invited lecturers cover these different topics, and the workshop will therefore be of interest to a diverse range of people.

Speakers

  • Jens Amendt , Institute of Legal Medicine, Frankfurt, Germany: Natural detectives - how evidence from nature can help to solve crimes
  • Wim Bert , University of Gent, Belgium: Nematodes-versatile animals with infinite potentials
  • Bertrand Fournier , University of Montpellier 2, France: Cadavers as a disturbance in ecosystems
  • Maria Alejandra Perotti , University of Reading, U.K.: Basic concepts in forensic acarology
  • Hanne Steel , University of Gent, Belgium: Compost-a case study of nematode succession

Content

The workshop includes both theoretical and practical parts allowing participants to analyse data to understand the processes and methods.

Mornings: Lectures (concepts, examples of research questions, current methods and debates)

Afternoons: Exercises with data sets (provided by teachers and/or by participants)

Day 1: Ecological disturbance and succession (Bertrand Fournier, Edward Mitchell)

Day 2: Forensic ecology and applications (Wim Bert, Hanne Steel, Jens Amendt, Alejandra Perotti)
