Edward Mitchell

I lead the Laboratory of Soil Biology at the University of Neuchâtel, Switzerland since 2009.

My research focuses primarily on soil biodiversity and ecology with a strong focus on a group of free-living protozoa, the testate amoebae. I am interested in understanding the diversity and functional roles of poorly known soil organisms, the response of soil communities to natural gradients, present and past ecosystem dynamics and the effects of human activities on ecosystems.

An important focus is on relationships among above and below-ground biodiversity, community structure (plants, invertebrates, protists and bacteria) and ecosystem function 1) along proglacial chrono-sequences, 2) in floodplains, 3) in peatlands. This research has practical implications for environmental management (bioindication) and palaeoecology.

With respect to testate amoebae, my long-term goals are to expand the basic knowledge on the ecology, taxonomy and general biology of these organisms to make them more usefulness for ecological and palaeoecological research.

My scientific contributions span: 1) Ecosystem ecology and global change biology, 2) Microbial ecology , 3) Palaeoecology, and 4) Phylogeny, taxonomy, and biogeography of testate amoebae.
